We keep our fire in the skull of a mole. We feed it tinder, charcoal, birch bark and pieces from the horse hoof fungus. In winter we bank it, and wake to feed it. We don’t let it go out. If it dies then the race to lightning begins. We watch for the storm. When lightning snakes out and snags a tree the race begins. We check for sharp beaks and needle claws, then run, run, run.

If the fire is still cracking when we get to the tree we’ve won! We loosen our mole skulls from our grass belts and mince among the coals. In the heat we find char small and right and scoop it in. Then we feed our embers as we clamber back home again. Fire!
